Biography

Jo Beth Gilliam is a Lubbock native who has embraced a fascination with watercolor for over 40 years. Her first watercolor class in 1982 began the journey, developing her loose and colorful style. ‘Santa Fe Morning’ was selected for the Splash 10 Best of Watercolor, 2008, North Light Book publication along with ‘Hats Off’ which appears in 2012, Artist Touch. Commissions for brochures, telephone book covers, magazine covers and articles appear with her recognizable style. A popular web site, Wet Canvas, produced a series of Jo Beth’s online classes ‘Painting from Photographs’ in 2012. She shared her watercolor experience for 20 years at Cloudcroft Art Workshops and numerous art organizations throughout Texas, New Mexico and Colorado.

Her works have been exhibited at Security State Bank Abilene, Texas, Lubbock Christian University, Lubbock, Texas, and South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. She is presently represented by the Forger Gallery in Midland, Texas. Paintings are collected by patrons in the United States and Europe.

Early in her career she studied with Christopher Schink and Frank Webb. Both instructors were instrumental for her continued experimentation with the watercolor medium. Painting on canvas using watercolor has been her preference for several years. She enjoys sharing the spontaneity and excitement of watercolor.

Artist Statement

“The first brush load of color on white paper and I was hooked. Hopefully the excitement and feeling of a chosen subject will be conveyed to the viewer. My challenge…. is to paint the next potential painting better than the last.”
