Biography / Artist Statement
John Cook was born in Dallas in 1941. He studied art at the University of Texas, Arlington from 1960-1962 and the Art Center, Los Angeles from 1962-1964. He worked as a freelance illustrator for 32 years in Dallas. His first solo show was in 1999 at the Victorian Gallery, Dallas. He has had one dozen annual shows, Southwest Art Gallery, Dallas.
I brand my painting style as “Impatient Realism,” Enough said…
He had an exhibition at the prestigious WH Patterson Gallery, Mayfair, London in 2003
with Members of Parliament attending.
Cook has earned awards from numerous national competitions including Best of Show, on at least six occasions, He has been honored at the 2002 Bosque Conservatory 17th Annual Exhibition Purchase Prize/Best of Show/John Stevens Jones Award and Best Watercolor.
He won the Purchase Prize/Best of Show at the 2003 Art Splash on the Square, Graham Texas. The 2008 Campfire Best Quick Draw honor and the 2010 Artist’s Choice and Best of Show awards at the Campfire, with Paula Kornye Tillman hosting. He won Best of Show at the 2011 Plein Air Southwest, Dallas; The Best of Show at the 2013 American Impressionist Society national juried exhibition; the Donor’s Award at the 2014 Oil Painters of America national juried exhibition; an Award of Excellence at the 2015 Plein Air Southwest; an Honorable Mention at the 2015 Rocky Mountain Plein Air in Colorado; the People Choice Award and Best Miniature at the 2015 Traveling The West Show in Dallas; the Award of Excellence at the 2016 Plein Air Southwest; and the Award of Excellence at the 2019 Portrait Society of America in Georgia.
