John Cook

Biography / Artist Statement

Born in Dallas, in 1941, John studied art at the University of Texas in Arlington and the Art Center in Los Angeles. When talking about his work John says, “I brand my painting style as ‘Impatient Realism.’ Enough said.”

He worked as a freelance illustrator for 32 years in Dallas and had his first solo show in 1999 in the Victorian Gallery in Dallas. In 2003 John had an exhibition at the prestigious WH Patterson Gallery in Mayfair, London where members of Parliament attended. He has staged a dozen annual shows at the Southwest Art Gallery in Dallas.

John’s work has earned him numerous honors, including at least six Best of Show awards at various art shows and the Purchase Prize/Best of Show/John Steven Jones Award and Best Watercolor at the 2002 Bosque Conservatory 17th Annual Exhibition. He has earned several other awards including the 2011 Plein Air Southwest, Dallas Best of Show; the 2013 Best of Show at the national juried exhibition of the American Impressionist Society; the Donor’s Award at the 2014 Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition; and Awards of Excellence at the 2015 and 2016 Plein Air Southwest at the 2019 Portrait Society of America in Atlanta.
